Friends –

Our minds have spun, we’ve barely slept, but because word is spreading, it’s time to provide a brief update.

Monday evening, incredibly quickly, a fire began in our basement, quickly filled our home with toxic fumes, and flames spread from basement up through the master bedroom into the attic. I’ll spare the hard details, but the house is a nightmare.

The largest loss however, is our precious Sophie, our Aussie. I know many will not understand, and that’s okay, but she is the 6th member of our family. We adored her, we adopted her together 2.5 years ago, she and I went on nightly dark prayer walks, hiked constantly. The house is just stuff, but the loss of Sophie is devastating. We have prayed together, we have wept, we will continue to.

Long story short, we are likely out of our home for 6-8 months during the turmoil to follow. The house will be sifted, perhaps some precious items will be restored if they’re able, most is probably lost. The house will be gutted, and rebuilt from the studs, all will be made new. We will go home to a new house in the shell of our old home. Because of my Grandfather’s (our old State Farm agent before his death) very good policy on our house, our home will be okay. That will be made new.

In the meantime, our broken hearts will be healed by the One who made us. The Lord is overwhelmingly faithful. If He is sovereign in all things (which we believe), He is sovereign in this too. And even when it doesn’t make sense, and we don’t understand, we will choose to hold fast to that truth.

To the outpouring (literally outpouring) of love, financial gifts, emails, calls, texts, and prayers – thank you will never be enough. Our friends, family, neighbors, schools, church, and the Lord are our calm in this storm.  Thank you for being our people.
